The Operating Room staff of this 250 bed community major medical center wanted to reduce the changeover and setup between surgical cases in their inpatient surgery department in order to improve patient care, improve physician satisfaction and increase O. R. capacity without increasing staff. Since the inception of Lean Healthcare the initial improvement of 46% has grown to 60%.
The shift change process on the Med/Surg floor of this 210 bed hospital consumed and average time of two hours and forty-six minutes. HPP lead the hospital team in a Lean Healthcare process that achieved an initial 36% reduction of time which saved the hospital over $300,000 annually in direct overtime.
HPP trains Nursing Team in Lean Principles and Healthcare 5-S workshop. By improving the organization of the O. R. Nursing Workstation they virtually eliminated supplies overstocking, thus reducing Inventory costs by 30%!
With the Lean solution in place, scheduling efficiency and effectiveness increased dramatically. Total work time for the scheduling process decreased 56%, accompanied by a noticeable drop in the number of postponed or cancelled patient procedures.
The department has posted a 50% reduction in lead time (an average of 67 minutes per patient) and almost doubled the number of charts it can process simultaneously, saving $1.5 million annually in related payroll costs as a result of Lean Healthcare. Delinquency, which was impacting hospital cash flow by $1 million per day, has dropped more than 10 percentage points to less than 50%. The hospital has realized a $75,000 annual tangible savings in payroll costs associated with staff time spent searching for information. They also experienced a 57% reduction in Same-Day Surgery patient wait times and the elimination of loose sheets of patient information.
